Man found dead in canal yards from Manchester City training ground.

A man found dead in an east Manchester canal has been named as Paul Strowger. He was discovered by a narrow boater at around 11am on Saturday, October 26.

The boater is believed to have been travelling down the Ashton Canal and was preparing a lock to pass through when he made the grim discovery.

Emergency services were alerted, with the area around lock nine in Clayton shut off. A man's body was later recovered from the water.

The body has now been confirmed to be that of 52-year-old Mr Strowger. His next of kin has been informed. Manchester Coroners' Court confirmed a file had been received regarding the death. An inquest is due to open on November 21.

Following the incident, Clayton Lane was temporarily shut off by police who erected a tent at the side of the water.

The scene was directly behind the City Football Academy, Manchester City's training ground, and facing the now closed Bridge Inn pub. It is just also just a short distance from the Etihad Stadium.

Locals walking along the canal, workers at nearby businesses and City fans making their way to the Blues' match with Southampton at the Etihad, all looked on in shock as police dealt with the incident.

Greater Manchester Police said there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
