A Philippine-flagged cargo ship, the Jerlyn Kathness, sank in the San Bernardino Strait off Samar island on Monday, December 30, claiming the life of one crew member while two others remain missing, according to the Coast Guard on Tuesday, December 31.
The vessel was struck by massive waves while transporting 24 tonnes of cement from Cebu to Samar.
Eleven of the 15 crew members were rescued overnight by passing vessels, Coast Guard station commander Bryhl Amay told AFP.
After spending over 25 hours in the water, another crew member managed to swim ashore to the small island of San Juan early Tuesday morning.
Fishermen later recovered the body of one crew member near Biri island, Amay added. A search operation is ongoing for the two missing crew members.
The Jerlyn Kathness is described by a vessel tracking website as a 199-tonne general cargo ship built in 1993. Further details about the incident and the ship’s condition before sinking have not yet been disclosed.
