Stakeholders Insists On Merit As NSUK Shortlists Three Professors For Vacant VC Position.

The Governing Council of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi(NSUK) has reportedly shortlisted no fewer than three professors for the position of Vice-Chancellor of the state-owned unversity.

NSUK has since April 02 being without a substantive Vice-Chancellor and controlled by Professor Abdullahi Sallau Modibbo on acting capacity.

Professor Modibbo’s appointment came after the exit of the 5th Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed whose tenure expired on April 02, 2024.

According to internal sources, the governing council led by Professor Muhammadu Attahiru Jega has shortlisted three of the candidates jostling to be the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The shortlisted candidates are Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, Professor Ibrahim Muhammad Haruna and Professor Suleiman Akwu-Odo Salihu Aruwa.

As n-Mirror reliable gathered, a total of seventeen candidates had applied for the vacant position. The include former Commissioners, Professor Alanana Otaki, Professor Umaru Gurku and Professor Ayuba Jonathan.

Others are Professor Ari, Professor Dinatu Iwala, Professor Bello Kamal, Professor Kighir Apedzen, Professor Barde Barnabas, Professor Bawa Gideon, Professor Ngwai Yakubu, Professor Shedrach Jatau, Professor Madu Magnus, Professor Andrew Zamani and Professor Namo Otsanjugu.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have appealed to the Visitor and Governor of Nasarawa State, Engineer Abdullahi Sule to ensure that due process was followed in the selection of the Vice-Chancellor. 

They stated that the quality of the state-owned University is currently at its lowest ebb and therefore appealed to Governor Sule not to jettison merit in the appointment of Vice-Chancellor. 

Regrettably, a retired teacher simply identified as Mallam Yunusa alleged that the preferred candidate of the Governor didn’t meet the criteria for the job. 

The University had in a recent advertorial for the vacant position of the Vice-Chancellor listed the qualities and qualifications of the candidate to include a distinguished professor of not less than 5-years post-professorial appointment with demonstrated ability to provide exemplary academic leadership and proven management capability and the candidate must be a scholar of outstanding national and international repute with a PhD in his/her discipline among others.
