Court Remands 30 Protesting Women, 8 Others Over Violence, Destruction in lafia, Nasarawa State

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State has remanded thirty(30) protesting women at the Correctional Centre over alleged act of violence and destruction of public facilities following the judgement of the Supreme Court that upheld the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule.
This followed their arrest and arraignment before the Court by the Nigeria Police on Friday afternoon in Lafia.
The women suspected to be opposition supporters had allegedly stormed the streets in protest and blocked roads, causing heavy traffic.
Some of the protesters were also alleged to have burnt tires on the roads which heightened tension and led to the closing of many shops and businesses.
The Court also remanded at the Correctional Centre eight(8) other male suspects who were arrested by security operatives for blocking roads, public disturbance and destruction of public facilities.
The matter has been adjourned for Monday January 21, 2024 for hearing on their bail applications.
The identities of the suspects remains unknown as at the time of filing this report on Friday night.
Recalled that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Shehu Nadada had threatened to deal with anyone involved in any act of violence during and after the judgment of the apex court.
He gave the warning at a peace pact ceremony organised for leaders of the All Progressives Congress(APC) and the People's Democratic Party(PDP).
