NSUK Declares Zero Tolerance To Sexual Harassment, Presents Sexual Harassment Policy To Stakeholders.

The Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman has declared that the University will not tolerate any form of sexual harassment by lecturers and students.

The Vice-Chancellor speaking through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Professor Theophilus Daniel Lagi made the declaration on Thursday 16th May 2024 while declaring open a stakeholders meeting on NSUK Sexual Harassment Prohibition Policy Awareness and Communication Implementation Plan which took place at the American Corner of the Main Library.

Professor Lagi who is also the Chairman of the Sexual Harassment and Prohibition Policy Implementation Committee stated that the with the application of the policy the University has taken the proper and right step to ensure zero tolerance of such misdemeanors. He further stressed that the policy document has passed and received the backing of the Senate of the University, thereby ensuring the legality of the document.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration while describing women as a weaker gender, urged them to be very wary of "predators" in the University and always be cautious of their interactions and where they go to in the University, he further assured that management will ensure that the law takes it's full course on anybody found wanting.

Earlier in her welcome remark, the Acting Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Dr. Hauwa'u Mainoma stressed the need for the implementation of the Sexual Harassment Prohibition Policy. She charged stakeholders present at the meeting to make meaningful inputs so as to make the policy practicable and workable.

The stakeholders meeting featured a brief presentation on the policy's objectives, scope and key provisions by Dr. Omadachi Okolobia, panel discussions on best practices and lessons learned which featured panelists drawn from the audience anchored by the Deputy Director Programs, Dr. Comfort Adokwe. There were breakout sessions where participants were divided into smaller groups for interactive discussions and an open forum for all stakeholders to contribute to the development of an action plan.

The event was attended by the President and CEO of Change Managers International Network and National Coordinator 100 Women Lobby Group, Mrs. Felicia I. Onibon, members of the University Sexual Harassment Prohibition Policy Committee, Students' Union Leaders and students groups.
