Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has embarked on a peaceful protest over the incessant cases of kidnapping of lecturers and students of Nasarawa State University Keffi.
President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke while addressing newsmen after the protest in Keffi, called on the Nasarawa State Government to take immediate measures towards tackling the rising insecurity within the university community.
Academic activities were partially disrupted at the Nasarawa State University Keffi as lecturers and students besieged the Senate building of the university to protest against the recent rise in the cases of kidnapping and insecurity around the institution chanting solidarity song
The protesting lectures displayed placards with comments which include Governor A. A Sule save us from kidnappers and terrorists, Our meagre salary is not for ransom and Lecturers lives Matter, Let the Lecturers Breath .
Addressing journalists, President Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke stated that the Nasarawa State University Keffi Community was gradually becoming unsafe for lecturers and students due to cases of kidnapping which had continued unabated.
He called on the state government and security agencies to take proactive steps towards securing the university community
Nasarawa State University Keffi Chapter Chairman of ASUU Professor Samuel Alu explained that the rate of insecurity around the school had become worrisome hence the protest to draw attention of the state government
“Within a period of one month nine lecturers including students of the university were kidnapped and released on payment of random amounting to million of Naira. Till this moment none of these terrorists has been arrested and they continue to in their acts unabatec.This we can no longer bear,” he said.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Nasarawa State University Keffi Professor Abdullahi Modibo remarked that the institution was working on modalities to tackle the rate of insecurity
“We are worried about the situation of kidnapping of our lecturers and members of their families as well as students of the university. We have engaged the services of vigilantes to secure the university community,” he explains.
Professor Modibo however called on staff and students of the university community to be conscious of their movement and lifestyles to avoid falling victims of the kidnappers.
